Elder Abuse

In the years that are to be golden, violence can still
affect a person.

Elder Abuse comes in many forms - physically, emotionally, verbally, financially, or sexually.

Facts
-Annually an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of physical, psychological, and other forms of abuse and neglect.
-It is estimated that only 1 in 5 cases of Elder Abuse is Reported.

Child Abuse

Child abuse means injuring children physically, sexually, emotionally, or by neglecting
their needs

It's Not a Small Problem
-Approximately 3 million children are reported abused or neglected each year in the U.S.
- It is estimated that at least 2.000 children die each year form child abuse.

What If I think a
Child is Being Abused?

The first step is to report it. You could save a child's life. You can also call Haven House for resources and information on the signs of child abuse.

Dating Violence

Hitting isn't the only type. Violence in a dating relationship usually begins with verbal and emotional abuse. The violence will often escalate to physical and/or sexual violence

At least 1 out of 10 teens has been in a relationship that has physical violence.

Getting Help
You do not have to stay in an unhealthy relationship.
-Tell someone your trust about the abuse in your relationship .Let your parents, school counselor, or an adult know about the abuse.
-End the relationship. If you don't feel safe breaking up in person, go with an adult or do it via phone or e-mail.

Getting Help - Sexual Assault

What to do if you've been Sexually Assaulted

-Get to a safe place.
-Call 911 or Haven House.
-Preserve the evidence: do not shower, douche, eat, drink, smoke, or brush your hair.
-Seek medical attention: you may have injuries that can not be seen. Doctors can also check for STDs and pregnancy.
-If you were drugged try to get the container that it was in.
-Report the assault to the police: you could save someone else from going through the same crisis.
-Seek counseling: sexual assault is a traumatic situation and it may be a good idea to talk to someone.

Getting Out - Domestic Violence

You don't deserve to be abused. You can get out.

Domestic violence only continues. When you think it won't happen again, it will.

Thinking of Leaving?
1) Make a safety plan - gather a bag of belongings that you will need when you leave. Click HERE to view a safety plan and a checklist of items to take with you when you leave.
2) Call Haven House to find the resources at your disposal and to get help.
3) Plan how to leave - Make sure you have everything you need to get out of the area. (For example: money for the bus, spare set of keys for the car, gas in the fuel tank, etc.)
4) Leave when the abuser
is gone - pick a time in the day when you know the abuser won't be home to stop you.
